We’ve been spoilt for choice in Arboretum with exciting projects happening across the ward. The creativity and diversity of our young people has been reflected in the wide variety of activities we’ve had on offer. With the help of Baby People, EMCCAN, Artcore, DCCT, Oz Box, Music Partnership and Derby Cricket we’ve danced, sang, painted, graffitied, made music and played a whole lot of sport!
Arboreturm ward is #ThisIsDerby’s closest community to Derby city centre, where there are many more activities taking place at different organisations. See below for activities and opportunities available to you in the city centre area, as well as those in Arboretum.

MoreArt Classes at Derby Pride Academy
MoreIt has been a pleasure to help the young people of Derby Pride Academy engage in creating exciting artworks. We supported them to make detailed mosaic coasters and prints using stencils on t-shirts. The children have many talents and unique ideas. Through discussions they suggested what they would like to do or learn in the class and the themes for the work. Our artists delivered projects to grow focus and creative skills bolstering confidence.
Artcore Printing at Arboretum School
MoreThese sessions at Arboretum Primary School have explored the art of printmaking with children through the theme of Derby Landmarks. The young people use polystyrene plates to transfer images in bright colours onto card, with additions of gold-leaf and printed text. An idea has also been put forward to explore banners and bunting through this medium. These weekly after-school sessions cater to about twenty participants per session, allowing participants to actively explore and collaborate with printmaking.
Artcore in Peartree Junior School
MoreWe are working with a range of Year 3-5 children to produce artwork for the stairwell of the Communications block in Pear Tree School. The project has been a real celebration of the diverse places these children and their families are from. The young people gained confidence in drawing and created colourful collages of own traditional dishes and endangered animals. It has been great to give the children a chance to take ownership of the project and make it a fun experience.
This is Derby has provided the opportunity for many young people to try new things, learn new skills and discover hidden talents that they can explore further in their school career and adult life. However, for some children, more progress has been made. This is particularly true for one of our Derby Pride Academy participants who has undergone significant growth in our workshops on mosaics and t-shirt printing with artists Magdalena Aron and Nicki Dennett, with improvement in patience, openness and focus, as well as developing his artistic skills. He has really benefited from the This is Derby project and we are proud to have been able to support him and positively impact his future.
