The website

Behind the design

A website by young people, for young people.

#ThisIsDerby’s web team of 14 young people attended fortnightly workshops at QUAD to understand how to design a website. They made decisions about who and what it is for, content, language and navigation.

How we did it

We’ve been working with designers Sam and Tom from Firecatcher to understand how they plan the look and feel of a website. Here are the things we had to think about:

  • Who the website is for
  • Colour theory & typography
  • Working through a process as a team
  • Evaluation & refinement

We’ve also been working with web developers Rob and Liam from Frogspark to understand how they develop a website, including:

  • Creating the sitemap
  • Understanding and using code
  • Problem solving and fixes
  • Evaluation & testing

Our process

01

Who's the website for?

We want this website to be a place where young people could find out about activities, events and opportunities happening where they live. We think young people should be able to go to a website to find all of this information in one place.

02

Creating the design

The website is designed for young people, so we made it colourful, welcoming and fun. It has lots of images and is easy to navigate by selecting the area you live in to find out what’s happening on your doorstep!

03

Content creation

We thought about what we should include on the website, what matters to young people, and what we would like to find out about. So, we created pages that list activities and events taking place in different parts of Derby, and a blog so that young people can have their say. The environment and well-being are important issues for our future, so we have created a space to share information and upcoming activities.

04

Coding the site

We learnt about CSS and HTML, and how websites are built by developers. We learnt how to code our website, how to fix broken code, and how to make our website accessible on mobile phones.

05

Evaluation & testing

Once the website design was completed, we looked at the pages and discussed what we liked or thought needed to be changed. We considered our main goal – to make a website for young people – and whether we had been successful. We think this website is amazing and hope it becomes used by young people from across Derby for years to come!
