#ThisIsDerby Photo Competition Results!

Written by Daisy Lloyd, Creative Education Coordinator at QUAD

In February 2019 we launched the first round of a city-wide disposable camera photo competition to schools and community centres right across the city. The first theme we set was “What it is like to be a young person in Derby”. In May, we set the second theme “The environment in Derby”.

A Mass Participation Photo Competition!

116 young people submitted their photos, which were judged by a panel from QUAD’s Young Advocates group. After much deliberation, the panel selected 1 winner (who will receive a Canon EOS 2000D DSLR camera) and 10 runner ups (who will each receive a digital Canon IXUS 185 compact camera). There was a really wide range of photos taken, showing elements of young people’s daily lives, where they hang out, special moments in their lives, special people (and pets!) in their lives, and an amazing array of locations and environments across the city, many of which are utterly beautiful!

We are thrilled to be able to announce the winner and runner ups:

WINNER:

James Ruston (Chellaston Academy)

RUNNER UP:

Dana Waysome (Chellaston Academy)

Eleanor Wheatley (Chellaston Academy)

Hayam Rashid (Chellaston Academy)

Jai Johal (Derby Hospital Youth Forum)

Jonathan Towell (Lees Brook Community School)

Lauren Maskrey (Lees Brook Community School)

Madara Aizupiete (Da Vinci Academy)

Molly Burton (Da Vinci Academy)

Rebekah Neale (Lees Brook Community School)

Tobi Wong (Derby Hospital Youth Forum)

Unusual cameras, amazing photography!

A disposable camera is an unusual piece of equipment these days – you are unable to see the photo you have just taken, and images are recorded onto old fashioned photo film. They are basic, have a limited amount of shots, and a flash that doesn’t reach very far! So with that in mind, the consideration (visually and conceptually) that the participants have demonstrated is absolutely breath-taking! We have some real up and coming talent in this city, perfectly captured throughout this photo competition!

Congratulations to everyone who submitted photos! You have done yourselves proud!
